Wadi Al Muaydin- A hidden gem near Jabal Al Akhdar
This wadi near Jebel Al Akhdar is a paradise for nature lover, trekkers, swimmers and campers which is easily reachable with a 4WD vehicle.
Planning to visit the famous Jebel Akhdar mountains? Have you heard about Wadi Al Muaydin which is in Birkat Al Mouz and lies on the way to Jebel Akhdar? It is one of the most beautiful Wadis in Oman but a lesser-known place to tourists. It is surrounded by the mighty Al Hajar mountain ranges and is a great place for camping, trekking, walking, and swimming.
How to reach?
It is 143kms away from Muscat and takes approximately 1hr and 45 mins to reach this Wadi from Muscat. A 4WD vehicle is required to drive through the 5km dirt road that leads to the Wadi from the main road.
There are a lot of farms near the premises of Wadi which also acts as a landmark of this place. Once you reach the Wadi, you can climb on the Falaj (an ancient irrigation system) and walk towards the Wadi. If you are scared to walk along the sides of Falaj, you can remove your footwear and walk inside the Falaj splashing water all the way.
The Falaj that starts from the Wadi Moideen has a vast spread network which runs through the mountains, under the roads and finally supplies water to the farms in Birkat Al Mouz.
Once you reach the Wadi, you will notice that the water is so clear that you can see the pebbles, plants and even the fishes inside the Wadi. You can get a free fish pedicure here by simply soaking your feet inside the Wadi. If you move ahead towards the Wadi, you will be able to see little waterfalls which are soothing to the eyes and ears.
There isn’t much sunlight in the late afternoon, and you can use that time to climb up the trekking path. The trekking path is marked with big red dots and passes through an old terrace farm. From there it further goes down to an old Falaj to a very slippery road filled with thorny bushes. The trek along this path can get difficult for beginners It might also feel difficult if you are not wearing the right shoes and clothes.However, the view from the top is so stunning and breathtaking that you will feel the climb was worth all the effort. A swim in the Wadi followed by the trek feels absolutely rejuvenating.
Wadi Al Muaydin is a great place for nature lovers and people who need a break from monotonous city life. It is a pristine and hidden gem at the foot of Jebel Akhdar.
In addition to this Wadi, there is an ancient fort known as Bait Al Redidah and ruins of an abandoned village in Birkat Al Mouz.
